Tech tales and images of a great flood
28.09.09

As I write this blog post, a large swathe of Metro Manila is still submerged in flood waters. In other areas of the metropolis, power lines and Internet connections are still down.

I have lived the early part of my life in the province where typhoons are extraordinarily strong and ruthless, but the floods that they bring normally subside just a few hours after hitting town. This recent flood brought by Typhoon Ondoy (international name: Ketsana), however, is something that I’ve never seen before.

Ondoy’s devastation is absolutely unprecedented…two-storey-high waters, cars piled on top of each other, scores of dead people, collapsed structures, etc. I thought I could only witness these terrible scenes on a Hollywood movie or in a comic magazine.
As in every recent disaster, modern technology has again played a prominent role in keeping the populace abreast with widespread destruction. A large part of these videos and images came from the victims themselves who posted them in Facebook and YouTube. Here are some dramatic images they’ve uploaded:

Facebook has also become a venue for finding information on where to make donations, relief operations, emergency hotlines, and disaster preparedness. What a great tool you’ve created, Mark Zuckerberg.

According to the state weather bureau, the amount of rainfall last Saturday equaled the volume usually expected for an entire month. Ondoy dumped 455 millimeters rain, surpassing the country’s previous high of 344 millimeters recorded in June 1967. Also, in comparison, Hurricane Katrina brought “only” 250 millimeters of rain in the U.S.

In the past, it’s usually the urban poor who suffer the brunt of a typhoon, since most of their homes are usually located along the riverbanks or made of light materials. This time around, even the rich residing in gated villages were not spared from the destruction set upon by Mother Nature.

The national government, as well as local town officials, have taken the heat for the poor evacuation of the victims in the flood’s aftermath. But, I doubt if the great deluge would have prepared those guys anyway.

It is in times of crisis, however, that we get to hear acts of heroism that are rarely displayed nowadays. Aside from small donations that people are chipping in to help those whose properties have all been swept away, there are stories like this that make you believe there are still heroes living in our midst.

Although the scale of this disaster is greater than what the Philippines has experienced so far, the spirit of the Filipinos will soar once again and, sooner than anyone can ever expect, we’d be on our feet again.

The radicalised children of the Nazi generation lead by Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom have a Nazi past. Their aim is to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows he’s only dealing with the tip of the iceberg.

The arrival of an attractive new girl in his school and neighborhood proves a mixed blessing: Maggie becomes his best friend and companion, admiring his many talents, but inevitably she soon falls for Cappie the other way, so now his ‘big brother’ and protector seems little Lucas’s rival, however hard the hunk tries to stay friends…

Air Force Reserve/ Army National Guard TDY's & Deployments?
I know that National Guard deployments are 12 months while AF Reserve deployments are usually 6 months. In the AF Reserve, you may not deploy for your entire 6 yr enlistment, in the ARNG, you will deploy at least once (in most cases).

My question is about TDY’s. From what others have told me, in the AF Reserve you will have a healthy amount of of them (my job would be crew chief). You may have one 2-3 week TDY every other month or so. To anyone in the AF Reserve who could provide some insight, it would be much appreciated.

Also, does the ARNG follow a similiar schedule for TDY’s or is just your annual training (excluding deployments) ? I’m trying to get a greater understanding to see what is the best choice and also juggle school and family.

All insight is appreciated.

I can’t tell you about the Air Force Reserve/Guard but I do know they have a lot more people on active duty per unit than the Army Guard. What that means and how much TDY you’ll have to do, I don’t know.

Army National Guard mobilizations are 12 months. Part of that is predeployment training so that the actual deployment is about 9 months.

Aside from that, you’re generally working 1 weekend (2 days) a month and 2 weeks a year. If you join a more high speed unit that could turn into 3 day weekend and a 3 week training period each year. If its the year before a deployment, they’ll probably be 3 day weekend and you’ll probably do two 2 week training periods that year regardless of unit type.

The vast majority of the time you’ll only have to work one weekend a month and two weeks a year. However, there are other opportunities. About once a month my unit calls me with training on new equipment (radios, laser rangefinders, etc) that I can volunteer for. On top of that there are other schools you may want or need based on your unit (professional development when you reach NCO levels at a minimum) that may require an additional time commitment. If you don’t want to make that additional time commitment, its going to limit how far you go. That’s not a big deal if you’re not thinking career anyway.

Constant Over the Top Canadian Nationalism?
Russel Peters once told a joke about Canadian accents. He said ‘this is what the Canadian accent sounds like, now I am talking real Canadians. Your dad, your grandpa were born in Canada, you are a Canadian blah blah blah’. Well, My grandpas, grandpas grandpa was Canadian.. I think its safe to say I am a Canadian through and through. I am proud to be a Canadian, and I love my country. I couldn’t picture myself living anywhere else in the world long term except right here in my homeland. However, with that being said, I am getting a bit tired of friends and people in the media being a nationalism nazis. In the media, it is more funny than anything. If they are interviewing a celebrity from the states or a Canadian celebrity back home on one of our homebread shows/news outlets. It almost seems like they have to constantly pop the questions ‘how do you like Canada!?’ ’so your Canadian? Where you from!?! omg omg’ like, who the hell gives a damn what they think of Canada? It makes us look like lame attention-W’s to the rest of the world who sees this stuff.

Another strange thing that I find with friends and people at the bars. I didn’t realize it was so un-Canadian to only enjoy drinking imported beers from Europe. Scenario: In the LCBO or Beer Store with buddies.. They all go straight for the cheap Canadian stuff.. Lakeports, Carlings, Bravas etc. etc. That is cool. I go straight for the Stellas, Pilsners, Bitburger, Becks.. 7/10 I get friends or friends of friends looking at the can in sheer awe like it is from a different solar system. ‘Why are you drinking beer from the Czech Republic for?’ ‘ughhh because it tastes better than that horse p*** they create in our country’. It may be a matter of opinion but to me there is a big difference between Coke and Pepsi. If I am in a drive thru and buddy says ‘we got no coke, is pepsi ok?’ hell no it isn’t ok, because Pepsi is cr@p. If I ask for a Stella and they say no but would Lakeport Pilsner be ok? HELL NOOOO.

Another little tid bit. Asian cars are better. Yes I said it. They are better. If I could get a new Ford Truck or a new Toyota truck what am I getting? The Toyota hands down. Yea the new Ford Super Duty looks bad @ss but its just fact that asian vehicles are built better. "Out of a job yet? Keep buying foreign" - Yea Yea… but we have Honda/Toyota plants operated BY Canadians so ugh.. yea.. thanks.

I LOVE CANADA.. but I dont give a damn what people think about us, I dont give a damn about buying a Canadian made anything to somehow ‘prove’ I am more Canadian or a proud Canadian. I think that stuff is really ghey to be honest. Hopefully there is more of you people out there because I am sick of these Don Cherry’s in other peoples bodies.

P.S Don Cherry is coo.

Is there an actual question here or are you just ranting?

Recommend good movies with deep thinking themes?
I need some suggestions for some really good deep thinking movies such as Silence of the Lambs, Oxford Murders, Revolver….What i dont want is the usual stuff u see in the cinema that always have the same old messages…give me something INTERESTING

I can suggest some interesting movies but they are mainly oldies made at a time when studios had to tell a good story to get people to go out and spend their money.
The Razor’s Edge (1946) Don’t waste your time with the 1984 version.
Enchantment (1948)
A Letter To Three Wives (1949)
High Noon (1952) Gary Cooper western.
The Prisoner (1955) So controversial that the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals banned it.
Man of a Thousand Faces (1957)
Silas Marner (1985)
The Straight Story (1999)
Tess of the D’Urbervilles (2008)
The next ones are French (with English subtitles) and are parts 1 & 2 of a continuing story.
Jean de Florette (1986)
Manon of the Spring (1986)

The ones older than Silas Marner are all going to be hard to find, but if you’re like most people today you probably wouldn’t watch them anyway because they’re B&W.
